Jill Hartley was born in Los Angeles, California. She is self-taught in photography after studying plastic and graphic arts and ethnographic filmmaking. Her first book, Poland, was published in France in 1995 by Éditions Créaphis. The Lotería fotográfica mexicana was printed in 1995 and 1999 in a co-edition by Petra Ediciones/Conaculta and in 2008 in a third new version by Petra.

Jill Hartley is the author of other books published by Petra Ediciones:
